This interview was sent from a friend in Norway. Thanks to him!!!
The interview was printed in a newspaper called «Tidens Krav».
Roger Hodgson: I’m back. I’m in good shape. And I have a lot of good music "in store". It’s a coincidence, said Roger. This is Roger’s third solo album, and each of them has been released at the same time as Supertramp have released their album. It’s our common destiny, said Roger.
Interviewer's comment: Roger is closed to 50, but looks like he’s between 30 and 40. Long hair and beard. In fact, he looks like he did twenty years ago. It’s 10 years since the last solo-album from Roger, «hai hai». Now he is in Europe on promotion for his new album (Rites Of Passage). It was recorded in Nevada City.
Question: What have you done since 1987?
Roger Hodgson: One week after the release of "hai hai", I was in a serious accident. I injured/damaged my hands, so I could not play any instruments for nearly two years. The album "hai hai" failed, and the sale was very low. After two years (at least) I was ready to work again. I started some projects, but I could not end them. I started to ask my self what I really wanted to do, keep on as a solo-artist or as a member of Supertramp. An important part of my life was to bringing up our (Roger and Karuna’s) child. And, in fact, it was my son Andrew who "kicked" me to begin playing again. He said: "Come on dad, let’s go out and play some concerts". The new album is an end of one period, and the beginning of a new period. My son reminded me of how fun music is, and I detected that I had lost a lot of my spirit.
Question: What happened when you and Rick tried to collaborate?
Roger Hodgson: I took the initiative to it, to see if we could do something together again. Our collaboration worked well for a while. We were working with the single «you win, I lose», and with «And the light». Both songs are old, and written by Rick. When I left Supertramp, I gave the name (Supertramp) to Rick. Four years ago I felt that we were ready to start a new period with Supertramp which should involve both of us. But after a while I felt that Rick only wants me because of the economic aspect. He needed me as an economic security for a Supertramp reunion. I would not be a part of that, and retired.
Question: You were in the audience and saw your old collegues. How did you feel about that?
Roger Hodgson: Rick played and sang very well. I liked the concert until they began to play my songs. It looked like Mark Hart was shameful over singing my songs, he looks embarrassing. In my opinion, he should not sing my songs. Rick has enough good songs of his own and Mark has some new songs on the new album. I think the new Supertramp album sounds like a good "Rick solo album". For me it is not a new Supertramp album. Supertramp was the magic between us five who originally formed Supertramp.
Roger Hodgson finished the interview by saying: "I don’t believe there will be any new attempt to reunite Supertramp".
Interview with Rick Davies
Interviewer's comment: On the stage, Rick Davies behind his El-piano where he was singing old and new songs together with 7 other men. Among the 2000 audience where Roger Hodgson, he left the group in 1983. It was unknown for Rick.
The concert was in «Annexet» in Stockholm.
It was Supertramp's first concert since 1988, and the premier concert for the 1997 tour. The old heroes are back with a new album called «something never...».
And of course their getting criticized, especially when Roger is «dismissed».
Hodgson was the man behind Supertramp's greatest hits like: Give a little bit, Breakfast in America, Take the long way home and It’s raining again.
But Rick Davies, the other "front man" was just as good as Roger, with his characteristic piano-technics, falsetto and songs like Crime of the century, Another man’s women and Goodbye stranger.
The concert: So we went to Stockholm to see Rick’s Supertramp, and we enjoyed it. But we did not like Mark Hart’s version of Take the long way home, the logical song and school. Mark Hart did not sing as well as Roger.
Rick Davies did a great contribution. Rick sang like a hero and played piano-solo’s very well. It was also fun to see John and Bob on the scene.
After the concert we were backstage and we talked to the heroes from the 70’s.
About Rick. Rick Davies was very polite and obliging. He was very curious about our opinion about the concert and the selection of songs.
Question: Did you know that Roger Hodgson is in Stockholm?
Rick Davies' face changed shape. He said: "This surprised me".
We told Rick that Roger was in Stockholm to promote his new album, and we also told Rick that we should meet Roger tomorrow.
"Maybe he was in the audience", said Rick, and told the rest of the band. Everybody in Supertramp was very surprised.
Rick Davies: "We tried to collaborate again, but he dismissed. I have written a lot of songs, and planned a solo-album but I realized that it was Supertramp songs I have written so, I united the band".
Rick admited that he was very nervous before the concert in Stockholm. "But I believe it worked very well tonight", said Rick.
Rick Davies: "We will release/produce one more album".
Sue Davies: "And maybe we will be coming to Oslo in the autumn".
