Laban-Grotowski: Workshops
A 30-hour Introductory Course
Actors, dancers and performers are invited to participate in a workshop offering two challenging performance approaches.
Director Kate Bligh will lead this workshop focusing on two different and complementary approaches to the preparation of the actor and the
practice of acting. Both methods use the physical realm of the performer as a point of departure.
The approaches offered in this workshop provide an intense exploration of the quality and nature of action. The work leads performers to
an improved level of physical and mental discipline, and requires an availability to transform and challenge the self.
Grotowski (15 hrs)
This exploration of concepts based on aspects of Grotowski's method focuses on the physical preparation of the actor and leads to work on
text. The aim is to discover, through physical action, the basic elements of performance. The work is based on the premise that the voice
is an extension of the body and emanates from precise physical action.
There will be a focus on:
Ø discovey of organic impulses
Ø engagement of the body in the flow of energy/action
Ø concentration
Ø incorporation of text and action
Ø tapping into vocal resonance chambers
Laban (15 hrs)
This workshop uses Laban's method of movement analysis in a specific approach to the work of the actor. Distinct qualities of movement are
worked on in isolation. Developed at the Drama Centre in London, the method leads eventually toward a kinetic and psychological system of
text and character analysis.
There will be a focus on:
Ø the specific qualities of movement
Ø connecting movement to language and thought
Ø precision and clarity
Ø a technical vocabulary for qualities of movement
Course fees: 225$ (including a non-refundable 50$ deposit)
Language: workshops are given in English and in French depending on the needs of the participants.
