Yohko and Azusa

Mamono Hunter Yohko / Devil Hunter Yohko

``I hold no enmity against those coerced into evil... But to those vile beings who toy with the hearts and souls of men... We, since the time of Ancient Gods, have been your destroyers. Now, the 108th generation Devil Hunter, Yohko, is here! Beware!''

From the outside, Yohko Mano may look like an average high school girl. She is sixteen, pretty, and desperately looking for a boyfriend. She have nice friends and lives with her mom and grandmother. But the day Yohko gets attacked by a demon in her school swimming pool, she learns that she's actually far from being your every day girl. Over the course of history, many female members of the Mano family have been mamono (demons) hunter, keeping the world safe from demons, spirits and other nasty evil creatures. And now, Yohko is destined to become the 108th generation mamono hunter.

Without being a genius piece of work, Devil hunter Yohko is a nice, funny, sexy story, mainly focussed on Yohko's fight against the forces of evil. The Yohko OVA series consists of 6 episodes, although episode 4 is hardly an episode, but rather a collection of music & video clips. One of these clips "Tokoro ga Dokkoi, Sexy Musume" is actually rather funny and stars a SD Yohko that's the cutest anime thing I've ever seen (SD Azusa is not bad either).

A few people might want to be warn about episode one. Without being totally an H-anime, the first Devil Hunter Yohko goes beyond what I'd call a sexy anime (after all, a few more seconds and we could probably have seen Yohko loose her virginity). But, the mistake (at least in my opinion) that was made in an effort to attract viewers was corrected in later episodes (in other words, no more erotic scenes). Yohko still keeps a quite graphic transformation (all her clothes being shredded to pieces and replaces by her red silk outfit) but that's not really a problem. Fact is, it is actually more realistic then the same (less detailed) kind of transformation used by the senshi in Sailormoon.

Past the two first minutes (time required to adjust to the voices), the dubbed version of Devil Hunter Yohko seems relatively good. I haven't any voice annoying, which is a good point. Yohko voice is quite nice. Azusa also have a nice voice, a type of voice that should have been used for Amelia in Slayers.

I guess I recommend Devil Hunter Yohko for adults who like animation. Just make sure though you keep the first episode away from young children (although they have great chance to see something "worse" somewhere else these days).
