Michel Beauchamp studied at the Conservatoire de Musique de Montrˇal in the class of Jean Valli¸res.  In addition to a first prize in guitar, he won the competition in Counterpoint, Harmony and Fugue under the direction of Jacques Faubert.  He perfected his skills here and in Spain with the great guitar masters Manuel Barrueco, Alvaro Pierri and David Russell.

At the start of his career, Mr. Beauchamp explored chamber music, in particular with the violinist Johanne Morin, the harpsichordist Yves-G. Prˇfontaine and the soprano Adrienne Savoie.  It was with the latter that he recorded his first disk under the label ATMA in 2001.  He then took an interest in flamenco, which he added to his professional repertoire in 2003.

Michel Beauchamp has appeared in Canada, in the United States and in France. Some of these recitals were broadcasted by Radio-Canada and by Vermont Public Radio.

In 2004, the Chapelle Historique du Bon-Pasteur asked Michel Beauchamp to present the complete works of Francisco T‡rrega.  Thus began a long period of research which led him to Spain so that he could carry out more intensive research. Mr. Beauchamp has supervised the edition of the complete guitar works of T‡rrega at Edition dÕOZ.

TēRREGA RECITAL

Francisco T‡rrega

More than just a recital, this project to play all of Francisco T‡rregaÕs  guitar works required a trip to Valencia and Barcelona, researches in national libraries and universities, studying hundreds of pages of early edition and manuscripts and many readings on this composer,  including of course the musical preparation and the memorization of all the 67 pieces.  This project took place for the first time in 2005 at la Chapelle historique du Bon-Pasteur. T‡rregaÕs compositions are all of a high quality standard. They share with ChopinÕs pieces the same lyricism and sweetness. T‡rrega is responsable for the renaissance of the classical guitar in the XXe century.

T‡rregaÕs complete guitar works divided into two concerts represent more than 140 minutes of music including favorite pieces like Capricho Arabe, Aires Nacionales and Recuerdos de la Alhambra.

In XVIe century began in Spain a tremendous period called the Spanish golden age.  The newly acquired unity of this country under the reign of the Catholic Monarchs, Ferdinand of Aragon and Isabella of Castile, and the discovery of America both contributed to the floorishing of surpising music, extremely modern for these times.  You will hear some of these pieces during the recital played either in solo or in duo.

Yves G. Prˇfontaine is very active on the Montreal musical scene, Mr. Prˇfontaine played for most of all organ concert societies and festivals in Quˇbec, also in Ontario, in the United States, in Belgium and in France where he regularly performs.  Much in demand for his talents as organist and harpsichordist, he played with many of the most famous Montreal ensembles such as I Musici de Montreal, Montreal Baroque Orchestra, Les Idˇes heureuses ensemble, etc.  Among his achievements, we must mention his performance of Francois Couperin's complete keyboard music. Since 1966, he is organist in Marie-Reine-des-Coeurs Shrine in Montrˇal and since 1994, he is also director of music and titular organist in Montrˇal Great Seminary where he organizes, every year on Sundays in October, a serie of organ concerts dubbed "Colours of French Organ Festival"

Fantasia para un gentilhombre of Joaquin Rodrigo – Fandango of Luigi Boccherini and other pieces for harpsichord, guitar and vihuela of the XVIe, XVIIe and XVIIIe spanish centuries.
